"Do you want to be my lover?" ROMANZE IN MOLL (Romance in a Minor Key) is a film with a timeless story about two people who don't really want to love and then do but aren't allowed. The unassuming wife (Marianne Hoppe) of a conservative Parisian accountant falls in love with a sophisticated composer. When her husband's superior blackmails her, she makes a momentous decision.
Produced in 1943, during the "second propaganda wave" of National Socialist filmmaking, the film stands out with its aesthetic opposition: shot in fantastic chiaroscuro in a studio setting, ROMANZE IN MOLLis Käutner's most densely atmospheric film, interweaving differentnarrative perspectives in flashbacks to create a unique German Noir.
